The Approach

Flight Training Designed Around You

No two pilots fly for the same reasons, and your training shouldn’t follow a one-size-fits-all syllabus.

I provide personalized, one-on-one flight instruction in Reno and the surrounding Northern Nevada region, focused on helping pilots build true confidence in the cockpit. Whether you’re learning to fly, pursuing advanced training, or knocking off the rust, training is tailored to your aircraft, your goals, and the way you actually plan to use your flying privileges.

My approach emphasizes decision-making, flying with a professional mindset, and real-world application. Every lesson moves you closer to becoming a great pilot, not just meeting minimum standards.

Cole Melby, flight instructor at Tahoe Flight Academy in Reno, Nevada

Meet Your Instructor

Cole Melby

I’m a Reno-based flight instructor focused on helping pilots fly with confidence in the real world.

My approach to instruction is straightforward and intentional. We train one-on-one, to a professional standard, and with a clear purpose: to build capable pilots who understand their aircraft, respect the environment they fly in, and make sound decisions every time they leave the ground.

Much of my flying takes place in the challenging conditions of the Reno-Tahoe area. Mountainous terrain, high density altitude, and rapidly changing weather. That environment shapes how I teach. Training is practical, scenario-based, and built around the type of flying you actually plan to do—whether that’s weekend travel, business trips, or becoming a professional pilot.

I work with pilots at many different stages—from those learning to fly to owner-pilots refining advanced skills—but the expectation is always the same: thoughtful preparation, disciplined flying, and continuous improvement.

Client Feedback

What My Clients Say About Training With Me

“Cole’s depth of knowledge and passion for instruction changed everything—he customized his teaching style to suit my learning needs, making complex concepts clear and relatable. His approach pushed me well beyond the minimum testing criteria, transforming my initial doubts into confidence and making me a far more competent pilot.”

Sergio Callegari

“I started training with Cole to get my complex rating and right away I felt like my flying was improved. Cole holds himself to professional standards and trains his students to the same standards. Cole helped me clean up a lot of little things to make my flying much more precise. When the CFII I was working with left the area, I knew that I wanted to finish my instrument training with Cole. I’m really glad that I did. I felt over prepared and totally ready walking into my checkride. And, more importantly, Cole trains students to be good instrument pilots, not just for the checkride. With all his training, including flying approaches in actual IMC, I feel ready for real world instrument flying. Whether you’re a new pilot looking to sharpen your skills, new to mountain flying, or want to work on an instrument training, Cole is a great instructor in the Reno/Tahoe area and I highly recommend training with him.”

Adam Spicer

“After talking with many instructors, Cole gave me the most confidence that he was going to provide me with the training I was looking for. Cole laid out a program on how we were going to achieve what I was wanting to accomplish.

It was a path forward not just to acquire the certificate, it was preparing me how to become a well rounded pilot ready for real world flying.”

Bill McCabe

“I have trained with about eight different Flight Instructor’s. Many CFI‘s are talented and knowledgeable, but Cole is rare in that he knows how to communicate and transfer knowledge successfully to all different levels of pilots. While I have started flying for purely recreational purposes, I very much appreciate how Cole challenged me to develop my piloting skills to a more professional level.”

Eli Ohayon

“Cole is an exceptionally diligent instructor. He instills good habits that will help keep you safe. His focus is not solely ratings and check rides but rather improving your skills and making you a better and more knowledgeable pilot.”

Christian Parker

“Cole combined professional yet practical insights during my flight review. He was very personable and accommodating, focusing on my mission and aircraft capabilities.”
